IMAX is Officially a Success

Want some additional proof that more 3D movies are going to be coming down the Hollywood pipe? How about this.

When adjusted to net profit, last year IMAX movies alone made 68 million dollars in box office ticket sales. That is up almost 48 million from the 2009 total of 20.5 million in IMAX ticket sales.

But here is the real kicker. In the 4th quarter of 2010, 54.2 million of the 68m in tickets were sold. That’s an increase of 50M in the 4th quarter alone. This increase in ticket sales can be directly attributed to 2 movies. Tron: Legacy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I am all for IMAX. I love the look, and especially the sound experience. And while 3D movies are not my cup of tea, I do think that the IMAX screen perspective is much more appropriate to the experience than a standard screen. So, expect more IMAX ticket sales next year, especially considering that they can tack on an additional 2 dollars to the 2 dollars above and beyond for the 3D experience.
