In a move that will likely piss off subscribers by the dozens, EVE Online developer CCP Games have revealed that the game will be dropping support tomorrow for processors that don’t support the SSE2 instruction set. To those not fluent in tech, SSE2 is not available in any processor Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon XP and lower. This update will allow the company to move forward without the additional stress of coding around the SSE2 instruction set, which affects only .3% of their current player base.
Frankly, I’m impressed that the company held onto that support for as long as it did. Figuring that netbooks (and likely the current generation of smartphones) blow these specifications out of the water, affected users can easily get back into their favorite game without breaking the bank.
