Yep, they’ve done it with some of the more classic PlayStation 2 games and they even did it for some of the PSP games when the PS2 was still the best console in the world, but starting soon (in Japan so far) certain PSP games will be getting the HD retouch for release on the PS3.

If you’re not thoroughly confused about how this might work, don’t worry, you will be.

The first game to get the touch-up work done will be Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (aka Monster Hunter Freedom 3) as you can see in the video I’ve posted below.

The game looks gorgeous no matter what system you’re playing it on, but the most interesting tidbit is that Sony is going to make it playable on the PSP and the PS3 concurrently. This isn’t the same as simultaneously because there’s a bit of work that will go with it…but you’ll be able to transfer the save files from either your PSP copy to the PS3 or vice versa. This means that if you’re playing the game on the console and need to go out for a day or long evening but want to play it still, load the save game into the PSP and get your game on while on the go!

That’s pretty cool if you ask me.

Some of the other titles that Sony will launch to the consoles (no word on whether you’ll have to buy a physical copy of the game or download) will even be 3D enabled if your TV can do so, and will have dual-shock controls that the PSP just doesn’t have.

I personally want the Patapon games and Valkyria Chronicles to shift over because I love both those series a whole bunch, but that begs the question, what games would you all like to see from the PSP make it to the PS3?
