Comic Review: Nameless #1 is a Tornado
Grant Morrison’s Nameless #1, from Image Comics, is a convoluted, crazy mess of a first issue, but that’s the best part.

I don’t know about you, but I go into any new Grant Morrison comic knowing I’m going to have little to no idea what’s going on. Nameless #1 is no exception. We are dropped right into the middle of the action, which moves forward at breakneck speed, leaving the reader clinging on by their fingertips. The first issue follows our protagonist, Nameless, through a journey into dreams and reality, so it’s hard to know what is real and what isn’t. He’s kidnapped by a group of men (creatures?) who bring him to their leader, a woman shrouded by a veil, a woman who wants to know why he needed the key to what I assume is the underworld.
Chris Burnham’s artwork is really cool. It’s detailed but leaves the reader to use their imagination on what’s happening just outside the pane or the full extent of Nameless’s narration, the horrors he talks about. But there’s also a unique use of panels here. For example, on one page, Nameless is speaking to a projection on a curved sphere, so we get four curved panels that mimic this projection. How cool is that?
Nameless #1 definitely does its job – it gets its claws in you and it doesn’t want to let go. Even though the first issue is a little convoluted (on purpose), the ending has me ready to dive into the next issue. I feel like this issue was a tornado and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens when the dust settles.
