Comic Review, Freakshow #2 (of 3)

Ape Entertainment continues this kick ass comic with the second issue of this short run for what I think is their biggest splash in the ocean of comics yet, Freakshow.

In case you need a refresher course, read my REVIEW of the first issue, and the great INTERVIEW our contributor Nick West did with the writers. We’ve both given high praise for this series, and well, I’m not going to stop with the second issue.

This issue didn’t waste any time with The Faces getting their revenge on our group of genetically altered freaks. Critter is shot right in the chest, but thanks to his lizard-like abilities is able to hang on. We get to catch a glimpse of what Fog looked like before she became, well….fog. I found it hard to not just get swept up once again as the guys were regrouping and trying to figure out what the hell to do next. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the comics been out for a couple of weeks, so if you haven’t picked it up by now, I’m telling you, JUST DO IT ALREADY.

STORY: 93%
ART: 96%
OVERALL: 94%

The artwork is probably my favorite thing about this comic, it’s just visually a treat. I don’t say that as a relative newcomer to comic books who seems to be awed by everyone who makes the pages look pretty. I say it because I appreciate hard work, and drawing these comics look like something that was done with an expert hand and a focus that I doubt I could find within myself. The story and artwork aren’t full of sunshine yes, but I don’t want to read that. It’s dark, and gritty. I soak up every page of it because I spend the rest of my time watching Sesame Street and other PBS shows. I want to feel like an adult, so I read adult comic books, and when the final issue comes out in the near future, you can bet your ass that I’ll be the first one eagerly anticipating the trade collection of all these comics along with what I already have.
