I’m not sure why they are dropping the ‘Of Mars’ from the title, but who gives a crap, I’m STOKED for this movie. Disney has released the first look at the savage world of Barsoom, from Andrew Stanton’s (of Wall-E and Finding Nemo fame) live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel John Carter of Mars. Which stars: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and Mark Strong and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon as part of the writing team. In case you didn’t know, this movie is marking the 100th year Anniversary of this character being released. Yeah, it’s OLD.
First off, if you haven’t read the book, do so right now, that is your homework assignment for this month. Read that book. Maybe we’ll start a WPR Book club and make this the starter book. Regardless, you know what to do right now.
In a great interview with the LA Times, Stanton dished out a lot on the movie, really you should read the whole interview on the link I provided. I tried, but It didn’t feel right butchering up the whole thing to just cut out bits and pieces for showing. I will do this one though, where he explains why he WONT be showing this at comic con this year. Which to me just screamed that they’re a bunch of pussies about the possible criticisms such a huge gathering of geeks could heap upon the movie if they didn’t sell it right:
I think what it was is the perception that it’s getting harder and harder to stand out amid the din. We’re going to do our special event to get some focus and separation. I know some people will read that as a sign that we’re unsure of our property. It’s just the opposite. We want to control how and what is being seen and the way it is presented.
