Bioware Writer Hates on FFXIII
It’s been weeks, maybe months since Final Fantasy came out and while we’re already over it, there was a quote that came from the mouth of someone I actually respect in the industry that is just good to pass over.
The writing director for Bioware, a Mr. Daniel Erickson was being interviewed and was asked rather plainly if he thought story comes first or if it’s gameplay that is the most important. His response is timeless and funny as hell.
“Well, before I address the main point I just want to take a slightly more controversial route: You can put a ‘J’ in front of it, but it’s not an RPG. You don’t make any choices, you don’t create a character, you don’t live your character… I don’t know what those are – adventure games maybe? But they’re not RPGs.”
I completely agree with Mr. Erickson. Final Fantasy XIII was about the furthest thing from an RPG in my mind…there was no free agency when it came to your characters, or by the time there is, it’s 15 hours in and not fun to play anymore.
