Bar Karma: It’s Doctor Who With Booze!
A man walks into a bar and trips over the string theory. I don’t have a good punchline for that joke, but that’s pretty much Bar Karma, the world’s first crowdsourced TV show. The show’s creator Will Wright, the giant brain behind The Sims and Spore, came up with the idea of letting the public decide just about everything about Bar Karma: The music, the plot, and even little touches like the graffiti in the bar’s bathrooms. Needless to say, no one should tell the Sonic fanfic people about this.
Anyway, Bar Karma is a bar that operates inside its own time and relative dimension in space (I’m gonna call it a BARDIS and there’s nothing you can do to stop me) and, as far as I can tell, it abducts people from history in moments where those people are at a crossroads. The Doctor Who references don’t stop there: There’s the wise old bartender who has lived several lifetimes, there’s the spunky girl with a British accent who, let’s be honest, is really just there for sex appeal, and finally, there’s the main character. In one night, he’s managed to win the deed to Bar Karma in a poker game and get framed for murder (or not get framed for murder, it gets all string theory on us at this point), so understandably he’s pretty confused.
It’s a really interesting idea, and if nothing else it’ll sate my appetite for cheesy time traveling drama until the real Doctor starts airing. You can catch the first episode here, and the rest of the season at 10/9 CST on Current TV.
