Spoilers Ahoy

It’s a little bit early in the season to already be tugging at our heartstrings, isn’t it? ‘Badlands’ is a very good setup episode for what is about to happen next. The alien invaders are royally pissed, Charleston is on edge and waiting for the eminent attack. We start off with Matt, and that rocking post apoc mohawk of his running through the perimeter where the 2nd Mas is burrowing in for an attack. When Crazy Lee, (that lady in Pope’s Berserkers) goes to take a piss, she’s caught in sniper fire.

Human, Sniper Fire.

Turns out, the 2nd Mass/Charleston is attack from a group of humans that are still hell bent on killing all aliens. Oh, and backed by who they say is the “real” president. Time for a runoff election! I kid, I kid. Ok, you know that this is going to make some heads start butting. They had to know that they would run into another group of survivors that had been able to thrive. Everyone wants to be President of the New United States. Hell, I’m sure that there are probably 30-50 New United States with their own presidents fighting the alien invaders, all thinking they’re alone. Now, I just blew my own mind.

I’ll try to stop with the spoilers now, but everything I said before was within the first few minutes. It’s interesting watching Pope deal with Crazy Lee being hurt, and as the episode progresses, we get to see a side of Pope that is pretty rare, but very raw, emotional and makes you feel sorry for the guy. It was interesting how Matt remained at Pope’s side, while I don’t think Matt would split from his dad. Pope is surly to start looking at the kid with more respect. Hal is borderline losing it, Karen has his head really messed up. It doesn’t seem he’s the mole, since he’s always away fighting or apparently with groups when we keep getting the little “who is it” scenes of betrayal. I personally think it’s Tom’s assistant. Or the baby.

Yes, I think the baby is the mole. Didn’t I mention earlier that Creepy baby sure is creepy? Just wait until the very end of the episode. Where you want to cry and then the crap hits the fan.

Badlands is a very heartfelt episode where Tom is trying to come to full terms of what exactly are they trying to accomplish, and if they’re doing it the right way. Time will tell, but now that it appears Charleston may be in for a big fight from multiple fronts, it’ll be a surprise if they even end up staying in the city anymore.

Ok, maybe that was a little misleading. The show isn’t going anywhere but uphill. How things are looking for Charleston and the 2nd Mass? Well, how do you think an invading alien army would take a big punch to the gut?

Seriously, I’m trying to keep the spoilers as non-existent as possible. I’ll just be trying to give you enough info that you may be gleaned from any TV Ad or whatnot. Also, I can’t wait to tell you about next weeks episode “Badlands”. Ok, I’m getting a head of myself. Lets just give you the basics of what to expect in the two part season premier.

First. This is seven months after the season 2 finale that showed us a new alien race landing on earth. There have been some big changes in Charleston. Matt, has moved on from the full head of curly hair into a early 90′s punk/road warrioreque Mohawk. Also, I’m kinda jealous of how cool it looks, since this is the first time in 4 years of WPR work I’ve ever mentioned a hairstyle on a character. Hairstyle aside. Matt is still a kid, doing stupid kid stuff. Except, I don’t remember blowing up skitters and mechs when I was growing up. Tom has been stepping up in a new leadership role and as a father. While Ben and Hal have further cemented themselves as military leaders. Ben in the Skitter Rebels, and Hal in his after-effects of that bug that Karen put inside him.

Second. The new alien race the Vohm, most notably ‘Cochise’ played by Doug Jones is interesting. Something that is just “Oh, Humanity” is that not everybody really trusts everyone. Are they good? Are they bad? It’s something that keeps going back and forth between all of the talking heads of Charleston, only time will tell which side of the fight they truly are on, unless they’re trying to take the whole battlefield for themselves.

Third. Horses! Nothing makes me feel better about post apocalyptic cred than seeing people riding around on horses. With fuel obviously in short supply, it’s nice that after two seasons they’ve finally decided to take a more practical means of transportation.

Fourth. I just didn’t want to end on three things. The season finale starts off excellently. We get to see how the Espheni respond to the results of season 2. Their stepping up the game in terms of technology and military prowess. Even how they use kids in their slave army that have been given a bug attachment.

Season three seems to be saying one big thing. The people of Charleston may have just kicked a really, really pissed off hornets nest. With the new Overlord, and new enemies to fight, Charleston just may not survive the season. I can’t wait for this ride and I hope you’ll be enjoying it with me.

SPOILERS AHOY!

Irisa has another vision in her sleep that the Spirit Riders are caught in the coming Razor Rain, Sukar gets taken down by a stray shot and is down for the count. When Irisa and Nolan show up, they find out that, yup, Sukar is dead. Nolan notices the Razor Rain is headed toward Defiance. Irisa stays behind to participate in the boiling acid burying ritual thing that Irathient’s do for their dead. Except. EXCEPT, Sukar pops up mid acid bath and is all “TIME TO SAVE DEFIANCE BITCHES!” Ok, it wasn’t like that, but he’s clearly has some kind of extreme purpose. Which is. Nanobots. More Specifically, Arc-brain according to Doc Yewll. I’m assuming that Arc-Brain is whatever master technology it is that controlled the Arc Ships that took all the aliens to earth. Apparently it can turn people in to superhumans and save cities from giant crashing pieces of Arc Fall. The important thing about this whole subplot from the episode is that Irisa and Nolan are drifting apart. As Irisa is starting to come to terms as to what her role as the Irathient Chosen One. I dunno, it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves.

Back at the McCawley howse, Quentin is still a little messed up for killing former Mayor Nicky’s weird henchman last episode as they fought over The Golden Pretzel. I’m only calling it that because, we have no idea what it is. Rafe tries to tell his son that he did good for the family by killing the intruder, but, you can tell that he can see the giant steaming pile that is collecting outside his doorstep.

Wait, that’s actually Former Mayor Nicky. Seriously, this old lady is starting to creep me out. Not as creeped out as watching Christie McCawley and Alak Tarr argue about bathing rituals, but still, close. What was with that whole thing anyways? Why are they even getting married? Oh well, at least Alak has a mom who is trying to buy a prostitute (Kenya) for her son so that his new wife will think he’s awesome in bed. This kind of alien vs human psychology is an interesting dynamic for the show. Defiance has been about really trying to push how extremely different the cultures are of each species (even the humans) and how everything isn’t totally blending together, but at least mixing it up a little at the edges.

Oh, Stahma Tarr, Alak’s mom, sleeps with the prostitute instead. Hows THAT for mixing it up?

It is hard to summarize my feelings about this episode. We got all of the elements that we had been waiting for. Arthur moving forward with his destiny, the epic final battle with Morgana, Merlin revealing himself to Arthur and Merlin realizing his full potential. All in an hour setup. The battle conclusion where a vengeful Mordred takes the sword made in dragon flame (I called it Excalibur Part 2) into the fight and manages to stab Arthur with it.

There is just so, so much to say about the episode that even after giving myself all these extra days to think about it all I can come up with is how this series as a whole has been fulfilling. We all know the story of King Arthur and Merlin, this take on it was well done and perfectly executed. After going the whole series despising magic, hunting down those that use it, Arthur is blown away that Merlin is a sorcerer. Though, with the friendship that they had built over the years (maybe Arthur being near death helped) Arthur comes to terms with who Merlin really is. His Friend, His Adivsor, is…idiot servant. Thankfully he apologized for all the mean stuff he did over the years.

Gah, I still have some kind of fleeting hope that this show isn’t really over, that I’m dreaming. But, like Merlin in the final scene, as he was walking through modern day Briton on a paved road. Walking past the crumbled tower of Avalon, surrounded by the lake where he put Arthur to rest. I have to move on too, accept that the journey of the Once and Future king is never truly over, that it will always go on as long as we talk about it. Or, as I will do, let my kids watch the DVD’s when they’re a bit older.

Merlin has been a great ride, crossing over originally from the BBC onto NBC, getting the axe here until finding it’s home on SyFy to finish out the series. If you want a show with solid writing, acting, and beautiful scenery as a young Merlin finds his craft, his destiny, and builds his love for Camelot. This adaption of Merlin is it. Spoilers Ahoy!

Even though there were two plots weaving through the tapestry of this episode, they both mostly had no reason to be near each other. Nolan’s story was the fun one, so I’ll get to that first. Pol Madis is an evil, evil dude. At least, that’s what they kept implying. Yeah, he did turn Datak into a puppet and offed that street vendor with a coin. Oh, and blew up his way out of a cell with some salt, water and a tiny pack of explosives. Did I mention he was some psychopathic weapons designer during The Pale Wars? Yes, he’s not a nice man. Even going so far as to tell Datak he just “enjoyed killing people.” That’s jumping to the end of the episode though, but I did say spoilers, right?

Nolan’s grizzled war buddy Eddie, or “Uncle Eddie” is that plot device that we all know where it ends up. They meet up for the first time since the war, punch some bad dudes in the face, and eventually the one that isn’t doing so good because of “x” thing that happened to him during the war leads to him betraying his slightly better off buddy (Nolan). All done with a western/sci-fi flair. So yeah, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Especially the genuine looking parts when “Uncle Eddie” realized Irisa was still alive, and that Nolan had raised her. You could tell he cared for her, even if she didn’t give a shit. But really, when DOES Irisa give a shit? Whatever, she’s still awesome.

Also, I just wanted to note that it seems the Earth Republic and Votan Collective are gearing up for another war. How that pans out, and where it lands Datak Tarr and his apparent support of the VC we’ll see.

The more boring, but moving the story of “Why is the ex-mayor so hell bend on destroying Defiance” Rafe is now seeing visions of his older brother. Who’s telling him about girls, where dad keeps his good booze, and how to win at sportsball. No, he’s actually just telling him stuff about the artifact and telling Rafe to kill creepy intruders into their house, then burning the corpses in blue lava pits in the mine.

Man, my brother is going to be so disappointed when I haunt him after I die.

PB has a lot of Candy People that want to marry her, most are…

Well, typical Candy People.

Then there is Braco he not only is 21, but inherited his place in line from his dead dad. You can tell since he’s all you know, sitting on the skeleton and all. My question is. If he dad waited in line all those years just to be the next Suitor for PB, how did he procreate? Are there candy women who hit up the lines for sexy time out of pity? I’m reading too much into this, I need to move on.

Peppermint Butler who is apparently practicing dark magic in a tower of the Candy Castle to summon a demon called Ogdoad, who holds the key to the Shadow Realm. Is doing so with Cinnamon Bun suspended upside down from the ceiling as a “willing vessel”. Yeah, I forgot how apparently crazy evil Peppermint Butler is. Crazy enough to slap PB at the end of the episode, right before the credits rolled.

This episode was all about Braco trying to find a way to persevere and prove to PB that he loves her and she should return said love to her suitor. It’s a charming little episode that in the end, is saved by a doppelganger. It’s a fun little episode that gives us a little more inside into Peppermint Butler, Braco and how Princess Bubblegum is so committed to her kingdom that she may never truly ever find her Suitor.

OK. Now, I swear I’ll get around to what I wanted to say. Merlin is all out desperate to save Arthur from his destiny. Which is death on the battlefield against Morgana and the Saxans. Death by yes, Mordred. It seems though that as Merlin tries so hard to keep destiny from happening, as Gaius pointed out. Destiny is a woven thing, you can’t change it, it only binds tighter. Something to that accord. As Merlin kept trying to decide on how to deal with Mordred, he was the eventual reason for Arthur sentencing the woman that Mordred loved for murdering Knights of Camelot. Which Mordred is also.

Confused yet? Well, maybe you should be following the show more closely. Fate is a simple thing, as Merlin is finding out. With Mordred finally pushing Arthur away and joining Morgana, revealing to her that Merlin is Emrys the one who has been eluding her, and will be her doom. The stage is set for the final two episodes of this fantastic series. Yes. I could most likely stop being one of the 100 people in the world that are fans of the show and hasn’t seen the ending yet. Maybe I just want to give SyFy my attention for bringing this show from the BBC. Maybe I’m too lazy to torrent the episodes. Maybe. I can’t wait for the next couple of weeks though to see how it all ends. And yes, I still have no idea how it all ends. I’ve walled myself that far in.

Secret Battles of Genghis Khan

Gut Reaction:

I am somewhat of a giant nerd for Genghis Khan related, anything. I’ve read more books on the man that I can think of and written far too many history reports on him. So, when I found out IDW was doing a graphic novel based on some “secret battles” I was very interested to try and have some fun with my favorite dead guy in world history.

Secret Battles of Genghis Khan features a bunch of battles that are secrets to people who don’t know about him. I mean, obviously these aren’t exactly how it the particular battles happened, but the nod to the amount of detail for historical accuracy was pretty good for me. It was fun to read through the graphic novel and soak in the landscapes, the deatils of the mongol horde and of course, the battles. The novel is the story of Temujin, (the given name at birth of Genghis Kahn) on his deathbed, asking for Jochi, his first son (though, not exactly his son). The book is the Kahn telling stories of the battles that he fought and how they built The Great Mongol Empire. From learning to build siege weapons by killing everyone but the artisans and engineers to taking whole citadels held by The Shah, Sultan of the Khwarezmid Empire. If you started getting bored and thinking you were back in high school history class. Shame on you. This is a good comic, and it does a great job of bringing Temujin to life.

Art and Writing:

The artwork is top notch, I really dug it. The landscapes of Mongolia, deserts of the middle east were all wonderfully done. Even down to the attire, which would be easy to slack on, but Alan Robertson did his homework and delivered. I may be a nerd for this part of world history, but I’m not a snob, it was just a very visually appealing book to read. The writing was great. I’m not sure why, but from reading the title Secret Battles of Genghis Kahn I for some reason though that it was going to be battles of Temujin fighting giant Ogres or something. If someone who wasn’t knowledgeable about Temujin other than knowing he kicked some serious butt on a global stage is only a span of 25 years. Then they might actually take some knowledge away from this book. I’m glad that it was written like this and Daryl Gregory gives a tip of the hat from me.

Hey, that’s not Adama. Wait, why is Starbuck a dude? That’s not Apollo! WHO IS THIS KID SCIENTIST GENIUS.

Oh yeah, there was a whole Battlestar Galactica before the reboot that happened a few years back. The reboot that got my wife for the first time in our nearly 10 years together watching a Science Fiction based show WITH me. It’s easy to then acknowledge that yes, I’d never seen any of the original series when I jumped into the reboot of the franchise.

It’s going to be a tough transition for me. I honestly didn’t even look into anything about this comic just assuming it was the rebooted chracters I was going to be reading. It wasn’t until I saw the cover that yes, this is the original crew. Not that it’s bad by all means, it’s just going to take me a couple of issues to adjust and re-learn the characters that are ingrained in my head.

Art and Writing:

The art looks good, it’s not sloppy on the space elements. You know, starships and ‘splosions in space. Cezar does a great job making me take in the pages and not focus on something that bothered me. The writing is going to take me a couple of issues to get used to. It’s not their fault by any means, it’s just a huge adjustment in terms of the story. I feel like this is like that time when my dad, who had a moustache for a lot of my young life. Walked out of the bathroom it is shaved off, and it blew my mind that some asshole stranger was using my parents bathroom. It’s the same Battlestar Universe, just a different face I have to get used to. The story is interesting so far, and as a first issue it warrents a 3 issue test to see if the story can really hook me in.

Gut Reaction:

Crom, I love this comic. It’s just so damn beautiful to read. Of everything that I read, this one takes the longest. Why? Because I’m staring at every nook and cranny of every panel, soaking it in. There is just something special about the artwork, the science fiction elements and just how the story has been coming together that has me sucked in. We get to see some more of the extent of what the Psion Machine did to Soldier 032 and how he becomes more unleashed. Not just in terms of his developing abilities, but being able to disconnect from the Stone Corp mind control that was in place. I can’t wait for the next issue, this is one of my favorite comic books right now.

Art and Writing:

I’m not kidding when I say that this is the best art in any of my current comic books I’m into right now. Every page, every panel just pops and oozes with talent, love, passion. As every new issue comes out, I’m becoming more hooked into the story, more hooked into the artwork. These guys are going to spoil the hell out of other comics for me. They’re going to make me demand more out of the comics that I read, I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but the story that is developing here is being missed by a lot of people and you really shouldn’t be missing out. Hell, just frigging o to Comixology already and download all the issues out right now, you don’t have a ton to catch up on.

Gut Reaction:

Mmm, Star Wars.

With Leia in ever more pressing troubles as it seems that whoever is handling her top secret dossier is actually the person trying to get her killed she can’t see to find herself a break. Even when she blows up a bunch of fighters and Star Destroyers with just Wedge & Co.

Solo is in the thick of the Underworld on Coruscant. Now, he’s got a certain Boba Fett and Bossak on his tail. Can a saniation worker really be his ticket out of the hornets nest? We’ll see.

It’s really hard trying to not be so incredibly Meta with this story. We all know how The Empire Strike Back starts and where everyone is. This cool little side trip into a story of what happened in that span of time before the Rebels get a fistfull of ATAT walkers up their ass is fun. But, it’s hard to really have any concern for the main players, we KNOW how their story ends, so the juggling act of keeping fans engaged and entertained is a tough act to handle.

Art and Writing:

Well, you all should know by now how much I’m into pretty much into every story that isn’t Marvel that Brian Wood is writing. Like I said before, I think this is a tough story to write about. Everyone knows the characters, they know how the story ends, so keeping these little side adventures going are a feat in itself. I’m not a die hard Star Wars fan, and I won’t be stopping picking these comics up. They’re fun and giving something new to a story that’s been told to death. The artwork is spectacular. Aside from 7%, Carlos is doing work that I’m in love with. It’s a beautiful comic to look at, his character expressions are spot on. And seriously, how he manages to just get a pure sense of emotion when you look at Dark Vader is a tip of the hat to both Carlos and the writing by Brian. Getting something out of a guy with a black mask isn’t easy to do, but I can feel it when I read just how Vader says something, and that subtle reflection off his dark mask. You’re really missing out if you for some reason can’t find yourself picking up this Star Wars comic.

Spoilers Ahoy!

Two things jumped out at me this episode that seems like it’ll be a bit of foreshadowing for episodes to come, somewhere down the line this season. Earth Republic’s Ambassador Olfin Tennety (Jane McLean) and Irisa’s position as the prophesied “devouring mother.” I think the whole Irisa having visions about how Rynn’s parents were murdered (and eventually leading to Rynn being captured and the Irathient being brought back more into the fold in the town of Defiance a few episodes back. Back to this episode, a coach transport is in town, which seems to be a defensive transportation vehicle that gets people across the badlands and from city to city. Aside from having a giant stack of town cash to pay for a railroad the coach is transporting Rynn to Vegas, which is now a prison area. So, Vegas hasn’t changed TOO much in the world of Defiance. Also, I read this is a tie into the Defiance video game whose storyline is linear to the show, but I’m not positive. Just this part of the storyline this episode has a very western feel.

Coach wagon crossing the dusty wasteland, lawmaker sitting around with prisoner in tow, the coach gets attacked by bandits, a robbery, standoff, twist and the good guys come out on top. All with the touch of sci-fi. It had me thinking of “The Train Job” from Firefly, where it really blended the science fiction and western genres and pulled off something that was both unique and yet all too familiar. We also get to see a bit of a twist on how societal/marriage structures have changed. E-Rep Olfin has two husbands tagging along with her, who are your equivalent of those high school guys high fiving that they’re having sex with the same girl. Except, she’s in control of the relationship and the guys are just pretty morons at her pleasure (mostly disposal). It seems like Olfin is going to be Mayor Rosewater’s “outside of Defiance” enemy when they’re not having her fight the Town Council and keep telling her she’s up for re-election soon.

The more interesting storyline (to me) was Irisa seeing a man from her past. You know, the one where they said Nolan killed her parents because they were horrible to her and all. Her parents were forfeiting her to the whims of a religious zealot that was intent that Irisa was a prophetess of the “Devouring Mother” some kind of bringer/taker of life messiah. As a child, she was bitten by snakes and tortured by the Castithan until they were at the final stage, Irisa killing someone as a sacrifice. Enter cut-scene of Nolan saving the day and establishing the seed of the father/daughter relationship. It was a little intense when the man couldn’t remember anything and Irisa was torturing him and pushing him to admit everything against his will. Tommy LaSalle (the human deputy) finds out about this going on, gets locked up in a handcuff and is forced to just watch Irisa torture the guy and eventually having a snake bite him. Where the snake came from, and why highly poisonous snakes are easy to come by I don’t know. After the big reveal, and Irisa being able to hold back, she releases Tommy and he beats the shit out of the guy. It’s funny how there is a “LAW” but nobody that is apparently enforcing it has a real sense of following it in totality themselves.

Oh, and Tommy and Irisa have sex in the middle of the police headquarters. Alien/human sexual compatibility issues aside. Tommy revealed the obvious (to us) love that he’d been building up for her in the previous episodes. We get to see a side of Irisa that shows that she isn’t just a cold ass killing machine/bad-ass, that she is capable of loving someone beyond Nolan. Also, dare i say, she’s sexy? Am I the only ones that think all the Irathient women are kinda hot looking aliens? Please, let this be the article my wife doesn’t read.

This many episodes into the first season, Defiance is still a amazing show and building a great story that can take subplots that keep the main story relevant and not derail what’s going on. SyFy also renewed the show for a second season. So, we’ll be seeing where this goes for another couple of years hopefully at the least.

This episode was right up there on the silly scale. Why do I have a silly scale? 1) I’m weird. 2)It’s “a kids show” remember? Regardless, a horse on a beach ball neighing it’s name to the delight of everyone that is sad, ever is a pretty high concept silliness. We start out the episode with BMO singing to an egg strapped to his chest singing about how the egg is his baby. Wait, BMO is a boy right? His song was kinda confusing, BMO is apparently open for any kind of relationship, regardless of sexual orientation. Though, I think he’s still dating Bubble, who popped and became simply air and said he’d always be around BMO. Where was I?

James Baxter apparently comes around on his beachball (which folds up into a dapper hat when he’s not rolling on the ball) spreading love and good feels all around. Naturally, FInn and Jake want to play a part also, so they try to come up with a duo of tunes that will make people instantly cheer up.

It…didn’t work so well on the first try.

So. Jake, Finn and BMO go to the sound institute and create the perfect sound to hit someone deeply in the feels. But it’s not until the discover that Baxter has his ball that adds the special element, so, Jake turns into a trumpet that Finn plays and then Finn rides him like a beachball to get their special tunes into people and make them happy.

Yeah, I told you it gets a bit silly. Where it doesn’t? The creepy skittering skeleton that pops out of the casket with the sad evil giant ghost thing that nearly kills Finn and Jake.

I was a little hesitant to start watching a new Sci-Fi show, especially on the SyFy Channel of all place. After Stargate: Universe went off the air after 2 glorious seasons I’ve been a bit jaded about the capacity of SyFy to have shows I want to watch.

Defiance is starting to change my mindset.

Mind you, Defiance isn’t crazy hard sci-fi. It’s fun and focuses on character building within the sci-fi setting which is big for me. One of the reasons BattleStar Galactica was good enough to turn my Wife who is very much, not into anything involving science fiction is that it was a heavy focus on story and characters. Some of the CGI was good, but it was short and sweet, stuff like dogfights in outer space and such. Defiance seems to be building it’s show around a core group of characters that we’ll come to love/hate and hatelove.

Spoilers Ahoy!

‘A Well Respected Man’ is basically about Datak Tarr, a Castithan who is a bit on the shady side being able to finally muster the political power that he’s been so desiring. As well as “earning” the respect of the citizens of Defiance but more importantly, the leaders of the city. There are several scenes from outside of Datak’s house, when he snubs Mayor Rosewater because Nolan roughs him up in front of his family just prior. Or, the scene where Datak is “helping” Nolan question a Castithan that might know the whereabouts of a missing citizen (more on that next). Nolan calls him out on the ploy of staging it all for show, for respect. Datak, caught red handed doesn’t even lose his cool just saying “You’re right, but I had no intentions of whispering into that mans filthy ear” and just walks away, letting Nolan get the information he wanted, and losing his end of the political battle. The episode has a very vibrating theme of respect through all the the character side stories, especially for Rafe McCawley’s youngest son, who is trying to work the mine his dead older brother used to work, and his dad puts a whole kabosh on the thing. Also, what the heck is that weird thing that Rafe found in his dead son’s room, what does it have to do with anything? It is the reason why the terraformers folded over old St. Louis instead of leveling it? Hopefully we’ll find out soon.

Joshua Nolan, the now Chief Lawmaker (sheriff) of Defiance really likes to have sex with the owner of the Need/Want, which is basically the town brothel/bar/gambling hall. Kenya, the aforementioned owner of the establishment is also the little sister of Amanda, the Mayor of the town. So, that’s not awkward at all. But this is a new Earth with new rules. See, when the aliens arrived, eventually a war broke out called the “Pale Wars” it only ended with the Arc Ships that had carried the aliens for 5,000 years to earth (cryogenic sleep, yo) blew up and unleashed a swarm of terraformers on the planet. Now, they weren’t using them yet because they didn’t know humans would be on the planet. Basically the terraformers went unchecked and changed the entire planet, dropped alien animals/predators and made crazy hybrids with our current animal stock. So essentially, earth got REALLY messed up.

That leads for new thoughts on what is acceptable in society it seems.

Back to the story, Kenya has a run in with one of her younger prostitutes or “Night Porters” as she calls them, when the youngin was stealing from the staff. They get caught by Ulysses the Bioman, which is essentially a hulk, minus the total anger issues. He takes them to a factory where some scientist that is wacked out on a adrenaline drug that is made by pushing people and scaring them nearly to death and extracting the adrenaline to make the chem. It’s crazy stuff, especially since as Kenya is going through the “maze” that the bioman put them in they’re boxed in by a Volge walking around. I’m not sure how that made sense, but we still don’t know a lot about the alien races but I thought the Volge was more of a swarming conquering army type.

My favorite part of the whole episode, tieing in everything about the theme of “Respect” was when Nolan looked at Stahma (Datak Tarr’s wife) after Datak accepts his newly appointed spot on the town council and appropriately just gives Nolan a look and shuts the door in his face. Nolan said to her “You know, I’ve had my eye on the wrong snake. You’re the dangerous one.” Her reply? “You’re very sweet.”

RESPECT.

Defiance has been earning mine, and I’m very interest to see where this show keeps going. Thank you SyFy. You still have a lot of building to do with me, but it’s getting there.

This was actually one of the hardest contests I’ve had to referee. So many entries were heartfelt, funny and the effort by you guys was astounding! Now, to our Interview!

WPR: This almost has that ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ kind of feel. Is Robbie just escaping his immediate reality or just escaping to a completely different world?

I have yet to see or read Tarabithia (but wanting to). Yes, to both. He is escaping his immediate life circumstances – shaky career, adolescent kids, wife – and revisiting an entire world he once dreamed up as a kid. So as you can imagine, it’s very easy for him to want to go back time and time again!

WPR: What is the best thing you ever did with a cardboard box?

I once put a bunch of them together, taped them up, drew on them, colored them, and made myself a bonifide castle. It was pretty sweet.

WPR: Are there any evolution in this world that were for the good?

This answer is a spoiler, so **spoiler alert**. The offspring of his imaginary friends is the only good thing left over from his childhood, and few select people who just had good hearts to begin with. Everything else is completely evil and messed up and out to kill him.

WPR: If someone were to encounter Robbie engaging with this world would they just see him squeezed into a cardboard box raving like a lunatic?

[laughs] He’d be squeezed into the box alright, but we would just appear to be sleeping to an outsider. Kinda like the Matrix, now that I think about it. But the cool thing is, if you watch him closely enough, say he cuts his hand in his “dream,” you’d see his hand be cut and blood come out.

WPR: Congrats on working toward fatherhood, are there any adventures in this book you’d hope your new kid steers away from?

YES! Everyone has a box, so to speak. It’s that alluring, enticing thing that no one wants to admit to anyone else. It’s their personal secret, and in their worst moments, they’d trade their loved ones in for it in a moment. I want my kids to be on the lookout for these boxes, no matter how fun or exciting they may be. I want them to always count the cost when pursuing something for their own fulfillment.

WPR: What has been some of your major writing influences?

Pixar movies. They way they craft their stories, and tweak them, and rewrite them, and shape them into as perfect of a story as anyone can possibly make. Pixar commentaries and books (I’ve read them all) have taught me that rewrites are an author’s best friend. Nothing, when telling a story, is more important than story. Nothing.

WPR: Being an editor and writing coach, how hard is it to keep yourself from overly correcting during the initial writing process?

I admit it runs against my grain when a story takes a direction I would not have taken it, or the dialogue is too forced. But before making any corrections or suggestions, I always ask myself: “Is this the author’s authentic voice? Or is the author substituting it for something less here?” So sometimes it’s hard, but I
have a system to keep myself in check.

WPR: What kind of family does Robbie have, why not bring them into his world within the box?

He has a very normal family, actually. His son is a comic book geek and doesn’t really talk to him much because they have nothing in common, his daughter, sixteen, wants nothing to do with him because he seems to disapprove of everything she wants to do, and in his defense, he tried telling his wife about the box, who is normally understanding, but it was just too much for her to believe. I think when she kind of gives the impression that he’s lost his mind, that’s when he decides to keep it his own personal secret. Plus you figure out pretty quickly that he actually wants to be away from them.

WPR What is something from your childhood you’d be afraid to see what it’s current state would be like if it kept alive while you forgot about it?

My neighborhood friends would often come and play in my backyard where I had this pretty sweet fort that my dad built for me under this giant oak tree, complete with porch, windows, tire swings, trampoline and all the trimmings. We’d always pretend that the ground was lava (what kid didn’t, right?), and we’d have to not call into it when we swung from ropes onto the trampoline. I’d hate to see how massive and explosive that lava pit has become over the years. But who knows? Maybe it’s all dried up, now. In that case, it’d make a pretty sweet tourist site.

WPR: Rock Paper or Scissors?

Paper. And a pen, please.

WPR: Last Question, because Crom demands it. “What is best in life?”

Jesus, my wife, and bean burritos. Oh, and I’m a sucker for snowglobes.

I don’t ask for much in a movie. I simply want to park my butt in a seat within a large room full of people and be entertained.

Man, Iron Man 3 delivered.

So many great lines, so many little quirky bits that had the crowd laughing. Tony Stark is the guy that everyone in the audience loves because he’s just that much of a smug, charming bastard. The digital effects are simply amazing. The nearly 30 seconds of a solid block of names in the rolling credits proved that, yes. A small army of people can make digital effects blow your mind.

The screening I saw was in 3D, which to be honest is “ok” to a point. I’m not on the 3D bandwagon, my vision is terrible enough as it is, I miss out on whatever the 3D effect is in the most part. I’m the sort that would recommend saving yourself a couple of bucks and just seeing the normal screenings. Nothing was added value for me in the 3D for this one.

While I loved a good 90% of the movie, it’s the 10% that’s been bugging me. That mostly has to do with how Marvel, in their attempt to tie in so many movie franchises within their universe bring me to the problem of tying everything in. Iron Man 3 is a self contained film. In that, whatever happens is for Tony Stark and the Iron Man crew to deal with. No help from Captain America, S.H.I.E.L.D., Thor, Hulk, any of the Avengers. Nobody but himself, even though the whole world is falling apart, everyone else is on vacation and just leaving it up to Iron Man to fix it all? Maybe I’m just being picking, but Avengers set the bar up there, it tied in the movie franchises and I have a hard time loosening that knot.

With that, The Mandarin is a classic villain, and man, I loved the twist when it starts to kick in and The Mandarin unfolds. Man do I love that twist.

Here’s the deal. Did you love Iron Man 1 and 2? Great. You’re going to love this movie. Are you hoping for more of a Avengers tie in story wise? You’ll be disappointed aside from a couple of references. The little friend that Tony befriends is a great moment, especially when they have to part ways. Despite their “connection” (teehee inside joke if you saw the movie). This is a fun movie, it’s going to make Marvel/Disney enough money to fund whatever the hell they want for all eternity. Watch it, Enjoy it, and remember one big thing. Share your movie snacks with your buddies. (Thanks for the Popcorn, Xopher.)

Howard stories and with a solid creative team on this one I don’t expect anything less. If you’re even a remote fan of the Conan franchise just check out the first couple of issues. Make sure you put it in your hold at a local comic book store, or, if you’re like me just get it off the Dark Horse Digital platform.

Synopsis: Based on the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank 2008 release “superman: Brainiac,” Superman: Unbound fins the Man of Steel apty handling day-to-day crime while helping acclimate Supergirl to Earth’s customs and managing Lois Lane’s expectations for their relationship. Personal issues take a backseat when the horrific force responsible for the destruction of Krypton – Brainiac – begins his descent upon Earth. Brainiac has crossed the universe, collecting cities from interesting planets – including Supergirl’s home city of Kandor- and now the all-knowing, ever-improving android has his sights fixed on Metropolis. Superman must summon all of his physical and intellectual resources to protect his city, the love of his life and his newly-arrived cousin.

If you haven’t heard the saying that we have here at WPR when it comes to DC movies based on their comics. It’s that the Animated Studio ones always vastly surpass the Live-Action. Superman: Unbound continues that legacy. Now, I won’t be giving you any spoilers on this movie, it deserves more than that.

Superman has a bit of a struggle going on in his life balancing his desire to protect Lois yet keep their relationship a secret while even donning the Clark Kent glasses. Add on top of that his cousin, Supergirl is still adjusting to having powers and what it means on Earth. She’s a bit more forward and reckless with her approach to protecting the innocent. The invasion events of Krypton are still fresh in her memories so she is still striving to find a role of keeping people safe and exerting maximum punishment on evil doers.

In case you didn’t know, Kara Zor-El (Supergir)l is actually older than Kal-El (Superman). It just happens that his ship made it through the wormhole faster by some 30 years, while she’s just a fresh arrival. Yay, Time Paradox.

Brainiac is a very interesting villain, in that I will admit that I knew minimally about him. Hey, I’m still learning how to swim in the world of comic books, give me a break. I’m swimming at least? That’s good, right? Brainic has been going around the galaxy blowing up planets and taking all of their science/knowledge/a whole city as a souvenir. According to him, he’s got at least 10,000 planets under his belt. I’m not sure what kind of rebate you get at that point or frequent flyer miles, but let’s just say he’s seriously well rounded educationally. And, packs a nice punch. John Noble does a great job of voicing a character that considers himself the center of the galaxy, a god without bounds absorbing all knowledge from the confines of his giant Skull Ship. Brainiac was both scary in a way with his unflinching absolution that he is a force that cannot be stopped and just his resilience to keep coming after Superman even when slightly deterred at times.

Oh, and maybe one spoiler. Lois Lane gives Brainiac the finger after a big speech he does. It was just as awesome as you’d think it would be. (The Rude Gesture in the PG-13 rating box)

Superman: Unbound is a just a damn fun movie. The animation is so well done that I don’t know if I can put justice to just how crisp, clear and so well drawn everything is. Just look at the pictures in this article, it’s visually appealing at all levels. The script by Bob Goodman is stellar, it drives a terrific story that kept me engaged from start to finish. Oh, and speaking of the finish, make sure you stay for the first half the of credits. I nearly missed it because I didn’t stop the movie and was writing down some notes. It’s pretty cool given how everything goes down during the movie. I can’t wait to have my kids watch this with me. Well my 5 year old at least, maybe. I’ll have to talk to my wife.

I can’t recommend this enough for those of you who enjoy DC Animated movies or are just plain fans of Superman. It is well worth the purchase price.

Spoilers Ahoy!

Conan the Barbarian #15, Dark Horse Comics

Conan find himself locked up in the fortress as Belit had him beat up to all hell and tossed in there for safe keeping. In this issue we get a little bit of background about how the father of Belit came to love her mother, her conception and then eventual being told to leave and never return.

So much for that.

Apparently her father is happy she’s back, and since she was first born, she gets that keys to the kingdom since her “older brother” born on the same night to the actual queen is dead.

Whatever, you want to know about Conan, right? We’ll you’re still seeing the softy side of Conan that is so devoted to his love for Belit that he actually put’s his life in her hands. It’s the touchy emotional stuff you don’t get out of the character much and it really gives him a more down to earth human feel. Since being a barbarian killing machine just isn’t enough these days. Eventually Conan is tossed out and left to die in an incoming sandstorm, a gift from Belit’s father. Sure beatings being killed on the spot.

Though, like all love stories, this one still hasn’t met it’s end, as Belit somes riding up to him after he is released. Most likely she slipped out against her fathers wishes, and we get Conan on both knee’s asking for her love and forgiveness.

Yeah, this isn’t the Conan you expect huh? But honestly, this is one of my favorite Conan stories so far. Brian Wood has been knocking the adaptation out of the park, and the art by Andrea Mutti gives us a slimmer Conan compared the last couple of issues, but very nice visual backgrounds that really appealed to me.

Adventure Time #15, Boom! Studios

Not so much a new arc, but more of a pre-story arc that is just basically an awesome jumping off point for the next issues. The princesses are having a big tea party of sorts. Wait, tonights (4/22/13) Episode of the Cartoon Network version of the show is called “Princess Potluck” similar, yes, but different in many ways.

Well, this comic version has Magic Man as the bad guy. A bad guy who gets so annoyed with Lumpy Space Princess that he tries to cast a spell on her to silence her. Finn and Jake, in heroic JakeSuit action intercept the spell and lose their ability to talk. THOUGH, they gain the ability to talk in very descriptive emoticons.

BMO approved winky emoticon style.

I had fun reading through the comic with Finn and Jake talking picture equations that make up the meaning of what they’re trying to say. For instance, a Magic Man head + a butt = :( , So they said Magic Man is a butt and that they’re sad. Really, this is just a fun issue to read and have some more weird fun.

Plus, it’s not very often that you get to see this many of the princesses all squished into one area and wonder at what exactly their kingdoms are like. Maybe I’m just the type that wants a giant map of Ooo and where all the kingdoms are carved out. Seriously, where would Skateboard Princess live? What is her kingdom like? Who/what do they rule over? Is anything better than the Candy Kingdom that Princess Bubblegum rules over? Is she the Princess of Princesses? Ok, I’m overthinking it all.

If you’ve been waiting for a jumping off point into the comics of Adventure Time, this is a great one to start on before the next Arc (next issue) starts a new batch of fun.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villian Micro-series #1 (Krang) IDW Publishing

Ever wondered what made Krang tick? What made Krang the evil ruler/conqueror that he is today?

I learned some stuff about the Krang’s history that gives me a little more respect for what I always thought as an annoying sounding useless brain with weird tentacle arms that has to use a robot body to get around. Krang was once a spoiled youth of the empire that his father ruled over. His father disapproved of him, called him weak and useless, and honstly Krang never seemed to prove himself useful. That was until he decided to sneakily join a group of soldiers that was doing a sneak attack on a prison planet that had been taken over by one of the biggest enemies of the empire. The group is surprised when they get jumped themselves, everyone destroyed, except for Krang.

Now, this is where all of my youth of assuming the guy was useless gets turned on it’s head. He’s using his tentacle arms to sharpen spears, jumping out and killing rats for food, barely surviving a toxic swamp. Capturing then RIDING a giant lizard to kill the leader of the rebellion on the prison planet, and then taking the army as his own.

He’s a bit more than I ever imagined. For that, this issue is well worth the read. If you’ve ever wanted to start considering impressing your friends with your vast knowledge of the TMNT universe. (Seriously, who DOESN’T?) then you should start picking up these one shot Villains issues. Even if you’re like me and the only person you really have to impress is your 5 year old that is starting to get into TMNT Animated show on Nickelodeon. You can impress THEM, who doesn’t want to make their kids think that they’re the smartest dudes ever?

Seven% #2, Red5 Comics

Let me just start off by saying that Seven % is artistically one of my favorite comic books right now. I typically don’t care about art as long as the story is good, but damn, both story and art have been coming along beautifully so far. We’re starting to see how the leadership of Stone Corp, a giant corporation in The Union flexes it’s muscles in the pursuit of the Psion Machine that is buried along with the hidden city of SubTerra. The Psion machine actually releasing the symbiote that fully attaches with UNION Soldier 034 and does achieve 100% activation of the full potential of the human brain. This comes with a price though. Soldier 034 doesn’t much like being cut off from the Central Command, the full activation has essentially cut him off from something he’s had since birth.

What happens when for the first time in your life you’re not only clear of mind, but have gained powers that have elevated you to a state of being that nobody will ever be able to understand? You talk to a bird.

Ok, it’s a bit more than that but it’s just the start of what I think is a visually and mentally compelling story. Red5 isn’t a huge publisher by all means, you should just hop onto ComiXology and download the digital versions, it’s well worth the price for some pretty compelling Sci-Fi.

This game is about as simple as the rock-paper-scissors mechanics it employs. Mages (purple) beat Rogues (red), who beat Warriors (blue), who beat Sages (green), who in turn beat Mages.

Never once did I feel that I had to make a payment to up my coin so I could get equipment faster. I typically blasted through the battles with just a couple of coin grinding (5-10 minute sessions) of beating up some baddies in arenas for extra coins. I had everyone maxed out on their equipment and ability trees in a reasonable amount of time that almost made the game too easy. Heck I had every single gold coin on every single battle because I got all the bonus feats. If you have to shell out real money for gold coins, then you should have just saved your money by fighting in the arena. The premise is, the King is a jerk, and raised taxes too high. So, everyone is a merc for hire trying to get the most attention for their guild (Warrior/Sage/Rogue/Mage) gain fame, and win the big ultimate award from the king for being such a good killer of everything. Not paying Taxes!

The graphics are actually pretty decent, and the dialog is 3rd wall breaking all the time. I actually chuckled at some of the dialog that pops up in text before and after some battles. This game doesn’t take itself seriously. As you can tell by the name in itself. It’s just fun and served it’s purpose as my quick fix but easy to put down after winning the next battle type of game. I beat it with no monetary investment and just taking it one or two battles at a time.

Definitely worth a quick run through if you’re bored.

SO yeah, BMO starts off cutting some dance moves with some bugs when the does the mentioned worm. When the eagle gets to the nest, it drops BMO into the mouth of a baby. Then keeps pecking him down when he tries to escape. Then he slips out of the babies mouth the next morning. I guess the baby bird doesn’t have much of a digestive tract. As BMO is escaping, he’s started by giant worm hiding under the nest shouting that he can hide with him. Just like a big ‘ol fat worm to do something like that to precious little BMO.

BMO slides down the moutain, cracks his faceplate and starts to get all mopey. Who rescues him? A bubble. Well, a talking bubble. The name of the bubble? Bubble.

It’s a very bubbly relationship (Bah dum pishh)

See Bubble is just as sad because he’s been wandering the forest trying to find his home too, but he’s having a hard time remembering just what the hell is home for him. So, with encouragement from BMO that Finn and Jake will help Bubble, the leave in search of the tree house. Find an ugly baby in the forest, drop the baby off a walking bridge into a river. Then bubble sets off a chain of domino falling events that saves BMO and Ricky (what BMO named the baby) that would do someone with a actual appendages proud.

Overall, it’s a fun little episode of BMO just being a cute little old gameboy with dirt in his butt and wet batteries. The ending was pretty intense. As we learn the fate of Bubble, and his love for BMO that was so intense, BMO said they could get married. Is BMO supposed to be a girl or boy? I never know. BMO is BMO I guess. Oh, and Bubble did find his home, after something happened that I called from the second BMO and Bubble met. It’s pretty rad SCIENCE!, kinda. At least BMO was happy with the end result. New Artist Gary Erskine brings a definate new feel to the comic. Part of the thing that gets me is when a comic moves over to a new artist when an arc is done. It’s done for some reasons of stuff like time and other commitments. Whatever the reason, I’m going to miss the work Garry Brown has done on the artwork for The Massive so far. I’m giving Gary Erskine a couple of issues before I lay down any serious thoughts, but like I said before sometimes transitioning to new artwork on a story makes it harder to get back into it.

Callum Isreal is in a difficult situation as Captain of the Kapital. With the world falling to shit around them, nationalities and ties back home are starting to get to the crew.

It seems that when you join the Ninth Wave, you made a binding contract of sorts to stay dedicated to the environmental cause. Now that homelands are being torn apart and family members lost and killed. People are itching to get back home and protect their lands.

Cal doesn’t want any of that. But, he can’t have people sneaking off or doing something stupid to just to try and save their families. In a nutshell, this is what this issue is about, who’s loyal to the cause of the Ninth Wave, who’s willing to put everything on the line to find The Massive and figure out what the hell is going on with our planet. Cal is running low on time, with the big reveal about a certain part of his health in this issue. It’s no wonder he basically just aid “Fuck You. Get off the boat if you can’t hack it.”

So, he’s down nearly half his crew.

That should make things start to get interesting around the ship. If you’re not reading this, you should give it a try at least. It’s something fresh, and I love the story that Brian Wood is building. The verdict isn’t out yet on the new Gary for the artwork, but I’m missing Garry Browns stuff to be honest.

Another Brian Woods written comic that has been keeping my attention is this one. I normally don’t give a crap about Star Wars other than the movies that I’ve watched maybe a handful of times. I’m just not that invested in Star Wars. This comic though, has gotten me feeling like a kid again wearing down the VHS of The Return of the Jedi.

Oh, and Chewbaca blows the crap out of some Tie Fighters hanging out the top porthole of the Millennium Falcon in a scene that had me giving the Wookie way more respect than the movies ever did. Han is still on his trying to flee from the Imperials that nearly caught him in the deal gone back with a boatload of rebel money to buy top notch equipment. I have a feeling the next issue is going to have some pretty cool dealing with his escape.

Speaking of escape, Princess Leia has herself in a bit of a pickle, her job is twofold. Find a new homebase for the Rebel Alliance and find the spy that is putting a serious crimp in plans. So when her and Wedge are out scouting again, they get surprised by Imperial Cruisers and Tie Fighters (Again). She can’t seem to catch a break.

I’m really liking how more bad ass Leia is within the Star Wars comic run so far than any of her in that slave costume. Seriously, the Star Wars movie needed lots of this Leia who was leading attack fighters and putting Luke in his place as the whiner that he is.

I think that writing dialog for C3PO and R2D2 would be a highlight for me, if it isn’t for Brian Wood (as it showed during the great scene in the data core). How often do you get to write something as iconic as these two robots, one you can understand, the other only the responses from everyone around him that understands beeps and whirls.

Hopefully, Luke stops trying to get nookie while he’s flying around in his fighter to start making more of an impact. Whatever, I know I’ll be back to read the next issue regardless, this comic has done more to rekindle a lost love with Star Wars than the prequels ever did.

EAT IT NAZI’S!

That’s kind of what I wanted to shout toward the end of this issue.

While I wasn’t sure where this was going to be headed after the first issue, I’m glad that it was solid enough to make me check out this second one. I’m already anticipating #3, so that can kinda tell you how much this new comic is starting to grow on me.

Basically, we find out (in a way) just what the suit is all about and that yes, it is in fact a suit. Not a full fledged robot. It’s powers does seem to be able to alter the powers and reality for whoever inhabits the suit, body and soul. Yes. Soul. It’s explained far better in the issue and I really don’t want to ruin it because it does a much better job of selling it that I ever could.

I’m glad that Sledgehammer 44 isn’t a limited issue run. I really want to see where it goes from here now that they’ve gotten the nitty gritty origins and stuff out of the way.

Now, it’s time to just kick some Nazi ass! Really, that’s all we want out of a WW2 themed story anyways, right?

Hoooooly Crap.

This is definitely a comic that is a far bit out of my realm of what I like to read.

First off, it’s bloody.

Super bloody. It’s very dark, very gritty, and very interesting. It doesn’t quite have The Punisher vigilante normal dude killing bad guys story. It’s enough that had me going against what I normally would check out and finish it completely. I’m still not sure if I’m going to start reading every issue of X from here on out.

It’s not bad to be honest, it’s just not my cup of tea, but I don’t want to give up on it that easily. Sometimes you just have to give yourself a different type of comic to read to keep you grounded. X has some pretty good writing, and like I said, if you like bad dudes getting sliced, shot and crow-barred in the face by the “hero” then X is right up your alley. I’ll give it a 3 issue test to see if it holds my interest at least.

Puhoy is really just one big fantasy episode. When it’s raining swords outside in a Sword Storm (teehee) Jake is building a fairly epic pillow fort. Finn on the other hand, is all bummed that Flame Princess doesn’t like him anymore because she didn’t laugh at his joke. If you’ve been (or are) young and in a relationship, we all feel for him in his time of confusion. He decides to head into the pillow fort to think it out, not taking Jakes warning to get lost in his thoughts.

Oh, getting lost in thoughts. Apparently, Finns thoughts start with a door deep inside the fort. When he enters, Finn finds himself in a pillow world that he thinks was created by Jake somehow.

Ok, the pillow world is pretty funny, from pillow birds that poo tiny blankets that softly fall to the ground. To pillow doughnuts for eating. Finn essentially spends the rest of his life in this world, as we see him growing in age every time it cuts back to him. He gets married, has half pillow children, searches for the portal back to his world until he’s a frail old grumpy man on his deathbed. One of the interesting things to note is that he has a robotic pillow right arm, just like Farmworld Finn from the “Finn the Human” episode that started this current season. I don’t know about you guys, but this had a touch of C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe feel for me. Even after he “dies” and slides out of the top of the pillow fort. Starts to tell Jake and BMO about his dream, gets a phone call from Flame Princess that she just now got his joke and it was awesome.

Then he forgets what the dream was about.

A whole life lived, and forgotten. Is Adventure Time trying to get all deeeeep thoughts on us or am I just over thinking it.

Oh, and this was the first time Jake has talked about his kids since the “jake the dad” episode. When BMO asks him why he doesn’t play with his kids like he is with BMO. Jake tells BMO that rainicorn pups age fast and don’t need their parents hours after they’re born. Then he just gets a little sad face. I feel for you Jake, nobody wants their kids to not depend on them.

OH, and Jonathan Frakes or Commander William T. Riker of Star Trek: Next Generation/bearded manly man of awesome provides the voice of older Finn in this episode.

Ah, pillow forts. Many I have built. Well, not while a sword storm is brewing outside. What world does Finn discover? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out! Bonus points if you watch the episode from a pillow fort of your own building. If you don’t have enough pillows, I highly suggest a less fortified but still as suitable Blanket fort.

Now I want to work from within a blanket fort.

On the car ride to the theater for the press screening, my father, mother in law and myself talked about the first time we saw Jurassic Park. I was a youngin, my Uncle Tony took my cousins and I to see it, I don’t remember a lot of going to movies in my childhood so this one always stood out. I remember jumping up in my chair when the Raptors were in the kitchen with the kids, and when the one raptor poked it’s head through the vent, my child self jumped very much in his seat.

I had the same experience in the 3D version, and I knew it was coming. Basically do this one thing, think of all of those scenes as a kid where you thought “Whoa!” Now, imagine that scene poking your right in the face. It was really a fun and incredible experience that I think everyone should enjoy. I can’t really give it a proper review. It’s JURASSIC PARK, in 3 ‘frigging D. If you had any sliver of love or even a simple like of Jurassic Park, you’ve got to see it in 3D.

My only negative thoughts are thusly: 3D Imax is super cool and all, but damn, it’s hard when the screen is SO HUGE to see everything. That might just be me though. Second, I really, really, REALLY wanted to take my 5 year old to the movie. He’s fascinated by dinosaurs and wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up. After seeing the movie again, I remembered how he might just not be old enough to watch it just yet.

Go see this damn movie already, talk to your movie going companions before it starts, try to remember how the scenes went. It’s a great ride, and will be well worth the 3D prices, even the added IMAX screening prices.

Alright, so, this may be one of the weirdest episodes we’ve seen in a while. I mean, the guys get THIS (below) in an email from the Ice King.

So, where do we go from there? Everything about this episode was essentially done by David OReilly, how his devious mind pull this off, I don’t know, but I tip my hat to him.

We start off with Finn and Jake making an animation of Ice King from one of their many computers you can see in their house (I just noticed they all had candles on them) Looking back at the image, it’s funny that there are spiders and a snake all over him, since well, Finn accidentally creates a spidersnake when he combined them at the source code of the universe and then said spidersnake attacked Ice King when he was stuck in (literally) the side of a house when all the glitched things in Ooo came back. See, Ice King made a virus that would destroy everything in Ooo, because he claims Princess Bubblegum said she’d go on a date with him if there was nobody left in Ooo.

Don’t tempt Ice King with crazy, he’ll do it. Lesson Learned?

Finn and Jake end up breaking into the source code of the universe when everything is glitching up around them. The fight The Glitch virus (a distorted looking Ice King head) and well, save the day. Coming in to check in on PB while she’s smashing the living hell out of Ice King’s computer.

Seriously, there is far, far more in the episode than my brief explanation, I’m honestly still trying to just wrap my head around everything that was going on. Oh, and apparently Jake and PB’s hands are dating? That’s a new one.

Maybe once I give the episode another watch or two to just get my head settled, I’ll try a big update on my thoughts, until then, embark on your own Adventures while you wait for the next episode of Adventure Time!
