2D War Of The Worlds Game In Development
Other Ocean Interactive, who previously worked on Dark Void Zero and the XBLA version of Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night are developing a game based on War Of The Worlds. Not the Spielberg version but a mixture of the original novel and the 50s film.Rather than taking place in 1950s America, it will be in the original location of London but still keeping with the idea of the everyman being caught up in the middle of an alien invasion.
It is being described as a “Singleplayer 2D Action-Adventure” and will follows the events and timeline of the 1953 film but from a different perspective. Particularly noteworthy is that the game will be rotoscoped, which is essentially an animation technique created in the early 20th century where animators trace over live action performances frame by frame. It’s the same technique that was used to good effect in the likes of Flashback, Out Of This World and the Oddworld series, and the press release even references those games as a comparison and the aim is to create a game in that vain. All I can say is that if it’s anywhere near as good as the Oddworld games then I’m sold. Too bad it probably won’t have the excellent Jeff Wayne musical soundtrack. The game is being shown off at E3 next week and is out this summer on XBLA and PSN.
